If they really knew God, they would know better. There are certainly other things, but this is in the beginning of the whole thing and it stands out as so stupid, so unscientific, that the only conclusion one can reach is that ignorant men came up with the best story they could based on what they knew. The idea of the firmament proves to me that the bible is not divine. You'd think God would make a point to get the story of the creation of the universe correct, but it was woefully inept, so why are we to believe anything he said about human affairs is any better? They really thought rain was the result of the firmament leaking the "water from above". they saw the blue sky and assumed there was water above there like there is below, and that there was something preventing the water above from reaching us (until God opened the firmament to cause the flood lol).
